The Lord’s Supper is an intimate time in worship service where we commemorate the death, burial, and resurrection of Christ. In all the years I’ve worshipped, from the womb to the pew, it has been my favorite time. I imagine Jesus in a dimly lit upper room, celebrating a historic act of God among His best friends, with good food and stories He co-wrote before the Earth ever began to rotate around the Sun.
As the circumstances of the pandemic continue to force us into new life practices like social distancing, I found creating a table of communion such a beautiful moment I look forward to all week. I can understand why Jesus made special preparations and why that night is still important to emulate and model.
The inclusiveness of Christ is a model for community building in any time period. He not only shows us how to serve others, but Jesus shows us how to live in community with one another. Matthew 26: 26-29 says:
And as they were eating, Jesus took bread, blessed and broke it, and gave it to the disciples and said, “Take, eat; this is My body.”Then He took the cup, and gave thanks, and gave it to them, saying, “Drink from it, all of you.
For this is My blood of the new covenant, which is shed for many for the remission of sins.
But I say to you, I will not drink of this fruit of the vine
from now on until that day when I drink it new with you in My Father’s kingdom.”
Jesus welcomed the doubters, the fisherman, the tax collector, and even the betrayer to a table to eat and enjoy one of the last moments of His life before His death. A table He to commemorate the powerful hand of God whose plan for forgiveness and redemption was acting out in real-time.
Now, during these times of such uncertainty, we have an opportunity to set the tables of our hearts for worship and to memorialize the life and death of Christ. Let’s not shy away from the intimacy of Christ. Let’s welcome our Him into our hearts in new ways, preparing our homes, our tables, and our hearts for Him to minister to us as we worship Him as our Savior.

Recipe for Unleavened Bread:
Ingredients:
- 2 cups flour
- 1 teaspoon salt
- 2/3 cup shortening
- 8-9 tablespoons cold water
Directions:
1. Preheat oven to 350° F.
2. Combine the flour & salt in a large mixing bowl.
3. Spoon shortening into the flour mixture.
4. Add water into the mixture and stir until it becomes a dough. If it seems too dry, add a tablespoon of water. Add a little more flour.
5. Split the dough in half and roll out on a clean & lightly floured surface. Roll dough out with a rolling pin until it is ¼ of an inch thick.
6. At this point, you can bake the dough on a cookie sheet, or you can cut the dough with a cookie cutter to any size you’d like and place on a cookie sheet to bake.
7. Bake for 13-15 minutes.
